ABOUT MAHOYAKU
Mahoyaku (Mahoutsukai no Yakusoku, aka Promise of Wizard) is very rich canon that mixes fairy tale elements with fantasy, beautifully written by famed (former BL) writer Tsushimi Bunta. It depicts the troubles and lives of 21 wizards as they try to from bonds with one another despite the incredible age gap between them - centuries at a time; it also explores their struggles with loneliness, loss, and love, as they try to save the world from a yearly catastrophe that threatens them with the help of the Sage summoned from another world.
It's a game app only available in Japanese, however translations exist for it readily available here on dw through
healingbonds (with someone uploading actual subs for the app on YouTube), and newer chapters on tumblr, so if you're interested or curious I've put together a GUIDE IN READING ORDER, by someone that has read and re-read this multiple times. Just be warned: it's hard to put down once you start!
1.) MAIN STORY (subtitled on YouTube - it's fully voiced, so I definitely recommend checking it out.)
2.) SPOT/AFFECTION STORIES (at
healingbonds )
3) PRELUDES (at
healingbonds )
4) ETUDES (at
healingbonds )
5.) MAIN STORY 1.5 (also subbed, however it seems incomplete, so you can check the translation at
healingbonds as well.)
6) BALLADS (at
healingbonds )
8.) MAIN STORY 2 ( at
healingbonds and the final chapters are at tumblr)
9.) ANNIVERSARY 4 (on tumblr)

NOTES:
- Main Story and the Anniversaries (except the 3rd one, which is why it's not here) are all considered the "main canon".
- Spot and Affection stories are short stories focusing on each individual wizard and their places of origin, heavily referenced in Main Story, so they're a must-read.
- Preludes (also known as Festivals), Etudes,Ballads, Rhapsodies and Fantasias are part of canon in the way that they depict the missions they undertake around the world, and because it only brings two countries at a time, you get to see them interact more closely with each other. Festivals are heavily referenced in Main Story, but from Etudes onward, other than them being really good (Frog Etude, for example, has won year after year most tearjerking canon story awards) and them being turned into incredible Stage Plays in real life, if you skipped them and just went to Anniversary, you'd survive.
- Only Main Story 1 and Main Story 1.5 are fully voiced, as well as the entire Prelude series. Anniversary 2, Main Story 2 and the Etudes are not voiced yet but they announced a bit ago that they all would be!
- There's Rhapsody and Fantasia stories that are part of canon as well, however so far I haven't seen any reference made to them in Main Story so I wouldn't count them as required reading (yet), but some are there on
healingbonds as well.
- Every April Fools we get a special AU event where the characters are AU'd into a different setting, and these stories are all independent from canon and incredibly interesting - they get their own collabs with cafes and stuff because they're THAT iconic. So far we've had High School AU, Paradoxroid (cyber AU), Yokai AU, and Pirates AU.
